How to Store Surfboards When You Live in an Apartment

Got surfboards but no garage? Here's how apartment dwellers on the coast store their boards safely without cluttering the apartment or leaving them exposed in the car park.

Living near the beach and owning a surfboard is peak Australian living. But living in an apartment and owning a surfboard? That’s where things get complicated.

Surfboards are long, awkward, and don’t exactly tuck away neatly. They don’t fit in wardrobes. They scratch walls. They drip salt water on the carpet. And if you’ve got more than one, good luck.

If you’re a surfer living in an apartment on the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, or anywhere along Australia’s coastline, here’s how to store your boards without losing your mind (or your bond).

Why Surfboard Storage Is Tricky in Apartments

The average shortboard is 170-190cm long. A longboard can be over 270cm. That’s taller than most ceilings are high, and wider than most cupboards are deep.

Common apartment surfboard problems include:

  • Boards propped against walls – they slide, fall, and scratch the paint
  • Boards on the balcony – exposed to UV, wind, and rain, plus they look untidy
  • Boards in the bedroom or living room – takes up valuable floor space and doesn’t look great
  • Boards in the car park – unprotected, unsecured, and at risk of being damaged by vehicles or stolen

None of these are ideal. Let’s look at what actually works.

Surfboard Storage Options for Apartments

1. Wall-Mounted Board Racks (Inside)

Horizontal or vertical racks that mount to the wall inside your apartment. They hold boards flat against the wall, off the floor.

  • Pros: Keeps boards off the floor, can look good as a display
  • Cons: Requires wall mounting (may damage walls, bond risk), takes up wall space, boards still inside the apartment, not great for more than 2-3 boards

2. Ceiling-Mounted Racks

Pulley or fixed rack systems that suspend boards from the ceiling.

  • Pros: Uses otherwise wasted ceiling space
  • Cons: Needs drilling into ceiling (may not be permitted in rentals), ceiling height must accommodate it, can be awkward to load and unload heavy boards

3. Freestanding Board Stands

Portable racks that hold boards vertically without wall mounting.

  • Pros: No wall damage, portable
  • Cons: Takes up floor space, can be unstable, limited capacity

4. Under the Bed

Some shortboards can slide under a bed frame with enough clearance.

  • Pros: Hidden away, protected
  • Cons: Only works for shortboards, dust collects, annoying to access

5. Over-Bonnet Storage in the Car Park

An over-bonnet storage cabinet sits above your car bonnet in your allocated car space. At 235cm wide and 100cm deep, it comfortably holds multiple surfboards alongside all your other gear.

  • Pros: Boards out of the apartment entirely, secure behind a 3-way lock, protected from damage and theft, room for wetsuits/fins/accessories too, no wall damage
  • Cons:Needs a car park space with adequate ceiling height

Why Over-Bonnet Storage Is Perfect for Surfers

If you surf regularly and live in an apartment, here’s why an over-bonnet cabinet makes the most sense:

Your boards stay near the car

Heading for a dawn surf? Walk to the car park, unlock the cabinet, grab your board, load the car, and go. No carrying boards through the apartment, no waiting for lifts, no banging walls in the corridor.

It holds multiple boards

Got a shortboard for punchy days, a longboard for small waves, and a fish for everything in between? They all fit – plus your wetsuit, fins, wax, and leash.

Boards are protected

Inside a steel cabinet, your boards are safe from UV (which yellows and weakens foam over time), car park scrapes, and sticky fingers.

Salt water stays out of the apartment

Rinse your board in the car park, let it dry, and store it in the cabinet. No more dripping boards through the hallway.

Everything’s in one spot.

Board, wetsuit, towel, fins, sunscreen, board bag – keep it all in the cabinet so you’re always ready to go.

What Size Do You Need?

Both Storage Vault sizes are 235cm wide and 100cm deep:

  • Small Cabinet (2.3 cubic metres)

Height adjustable 201-221cm. Fits shortboards and most fun boards comfortably. $1,749.

  • Large Locker (3.2 cubic metres)

Height adjustable 230-260cm. Fits longboards and multiple boards easily. $1,899.

If you have longboards or a quiver of boards, the Large unit gives you the most flexibility. Both units hold up to 500kg, so weight is never an issue.

Tips for Storing Surfboards in an Over-Bonnet Cabinet

  • Store boards in padded board bags or use foam between boards to prevent ding marks
  • Stand boards on their tail fins-up, or lay flat with padding between each board
  • Keep a small tub inside for wax, fins, leashes, and repair kits
  • Hang wetsuits to dry before storing to prevent mildew
  • Use the remaining space for other beach gear – chairs, umbrellas, eskies, boogie boards

Surf-Ready Storage

An over-bonnet storage cabinet turns your car park space into a surf gear station. Everything in one place, locked up and ready to go whenever the swell hits.

Storage Vault cabinets are fire-safe, body corporate preferred, and come with a 10-year warranty. Free-standing design means no drilling. Just set it up and start storing.
