One of the most common questions people ask before buying an over-bonnet storage cabinet is, “How hard is it to put together?”
Fair question. It’s a big steel unit with a 500kg load capacity, surely it takes a team of professionals and half a day?
Not quite. Two people, a couple of basic tools, and about two hours. That’s it.
Here’s what’s actually involved, from opening the packaging to loading your first items.
What Arrives
Your over-bonnet storage cabinet arrives flat-packed in 5 separate packages. If you’re picking up from Caloundra, you’ll need a ute or large van to fit everything.
Inside the packages you’ll find:
- Steel panels (sides, top, base)
- Four adjustable legs with levelling feet
- Gas struts (Stabilus brand) for the opening mechanism
- Lenlok 3-way locking system components
- All fasteners and hardware
- Assembly instructions
Everything is powder-coated and ready to assemble. No painting, no cutting, no welding.
Tools You’ll Need
Keep it simple. You don’t need a workshop full of gear:
- Adjustable spanner – for tightening bolts
- Screwdriver (Phillips head) – for smaller fasteners
- Drill with Allen key bit – recommended, as it speeds up the process significantly (standard Allen keys work too, but take longer)
- Pop rivet gun – for securing specific panel connections
That’s the full list. If you’ve got a basic tool kit at home, you probably have everything except possibly the pop rivet gun (available from any hardware store for under $30).
The Assembly Process
While the included instructions walk you through every step, here’s a general overview of what to expect:
Step 1: Prepare the Area (10 minutes)
Clear your car park space and lay out all the components. Check that everything is present and undamaged. Read through the instructions once before starting – it saves time later.
Step 2: Assemble the Frame and Legs (30 minutes)
The legs attach to the base frame first. Each leg has independent height adjustment at 100mm increments, so you can set the overall height during this step. Each leg also has its own adjustable foot for levelling.
This is the stage where having two people matters most – one person holds components in position while the other fastens them.
Step 3: Attach the Panels (40 minutes)
The side panels, back panel, and top panel attach to the frame. This is where the drill with Allen key bit really speeds things up compared to hand-tightening every fastener.
Take your time getting panels aligned before tightening – it’s easier to adjust now than to redo later.
Step 4: Install Gas Struts and Lid (20 minutes)
The Stabilus gas struts mount between the frame and the lid, allowing the opening to lift smoothly with one hand. Follow the instructions carefully for strut positioning – proper placement ensures smooth operation.
Step 5: Install the Locking System (15 minutes)
The Lenlok 3-way locking system with double-ended locking struts goes in last. Once installed, test it several times to make sure it engages and releases properly.
Step 6: Level and Adjust (5 minutes)
With the unit assembled, fine-tune the leg heights and levelling feet to get it sitting perfectly on your car park floor. Check that the lid opens and closes smoothly, and that the lock engages cleanly.
Tips From People Who’ve Done It
Lay everything out first. Don’t start pulling parts from packages mid-assembly. Lay all components out, identify them against the instructions, and organise before you begin.
- Use the drill. Seriously. Hand-tightening Allen key bolts on a steel cabinet is tedious. A drill with the right bit turns a 3-hour job into a 2-hour job.
- Don’t fully tighten until the end. Leave bolts finger-tight during initial assembly so you can adjust panel alignment. Once everything is in position, do a final tighten-up pass.
- Work on a flat area if possible. If your car park space has a slope or drain, final levelling is easier if the initial assembly happens on a flat section. The levelling feet handle the rest once it’s in position.
- Wear gloves. Steel edges can be sharp during handling. Basic work gloves protect your hands and give better grip.
